Nephoscope - Claude Lorrain mirror

Concave black mirror used by artists and painters to copy landscapes. The artist was copying the landscape reflected in the mirror which produced an fish-eye image with mild colours due to a partial polarization of light. Equipped with a kind of pointer or grid, it was used as nephoscope for observing, following and measuring the movements of clouds.
