The Science Laboratory Center of Chania “K. M. Koumas” operates within the Second Grade Education and its goal is to support teachers of the Second and First Grade Education on the experimental teaching of Science. Its action started in 1986 in a different way. In 1996, based on its experience, it contributed along with other laboratories to the creation of Science Laboratory Centers. Its multilateral action is described on the website http://ekfe.chan.sch.gr/, where you can find helpful material for the experimental teaching of Science.
The idea of collecting scientific instruments and museum material was Vasilis Baryiannis’, who was school counselor at the time. It was implemented after longtime efforts by the manager of the Science Laboratory Center of Chania, D. Markoyiannakis, with the contribution of many coworkers and colleagues, especially of the physicist N. Anastasakis (photo shoot / preservation / repair) and of the teacher G. Stylianakakis (preservation / repair). The collection dates from 1928 and comes from the oldest school units of Chania, such as the 1st and 2nd High School of Chania, Vamos, Kantanos and Palaiochora.
The goal of the Science Laboratory Center of Chania is the foundation of a Scientific Instruments’ Museum, in order to highlight and utilize history, connecting the old with the new.
